Domain Name FAQs
What is a domain name?
Your domain name is your address on the web — like yourbusiness.co.uk — the thing people type to find you. It’s also the foundation of your professional email ([email protected]), so it does double duty as your brand’s home online. Choosing a good one — short, memorable and on-brand — is one of the most important early steps in getting your business online.
How do I search for a domain name?
Just type the name you have in mind into the search box above and hit search. We’ll instantly tell you whether it’s available, and if your first choice is taken, we’ll suggest close alternatives and other endings (like .com, .co.uk or .uk) so you can find one that fits. Take your time and try a few — it costs nothing to look >>> Search for a domain name
How do I purchase a domain name?
Once you’ve found an available domain you love, simply add it to your basket and check out — it’s registered instantly and it’s yours. From there we’ll include free DNS so you can point it wherever you need, set it to renew automatically so you never lose it, and you can add optional privacy protection to keep your details off the public record. If you’d like a hand at any point, our UK team is happy to help.
How do I transfer a domain name to PAC?
Moving a domain you own elsewhere is straightforward, and we’ll guide you through each step. For most domains (like .com), you’ll unlock the domain at your current provider and request an authorisation (EPP) code, then start the transfer with us and enter that code. For .uk domains, it works a little differently — instead of an auth code, you simply change the domain’s IPS tag to ours at your current provider after placing a domain transfer order at PAC, and then we’ll take care of the rest. Either way, your domain keeps working throughout, and once it’s with us you’ll manage everything in one place with free DNS included. Head to our transfer page to get started >> Transfer a domain
Do I need a domain to get hosting (or hosting to get a domain)?
Not at all — you can buy a domain on its own, hosting on its own, or both together. Many people register a domain first to secure the name, then add hosting when they’re ready to build. And if you take a yearly hosting plan, your domain could be free. Whatever order suits you, it’s easy to bring them together later.
What domain endings (extensions) can I register?
With over 1,100 domain extensions available, whatever you have in mind we’ve almost certainly got it. From familiar favourites like .com, .co.uk, .uk and .org, to industry-specific and creative endings that help your name stand out, you’re spoilt for choice. Just search for the name you want and we’ll show you what’s available across the different endings.
What is domain privacy protection?
When you register a domain, your contact details can appear on the public WHOIS record for anyone to look up. Privacy protection keeps that information hidden, cutting down the spam and cold calls that often follow a new registration. For .uk domains, individuals can hide their address free of charge through Nominet’s own opt-out. For all other domain types, our ID Protection add-on keeps your name, address, email and phone number out of the public record for a small charge — and you can add it at checkout.
Will my domain renew automatically?
Yes — we set your domain to renew automatically by default, so you’re never at risk of losing it to a missed date (and losing a domain can mean losing your website and email overnight). We’ll remind you before each renewal, and you’re always free to turn auto-renewal off if you’d prefer to renew manually.
