Self Managed VPS FAQ
What does "self-managed" mean?
You take the raw server and run it entirely your own way — your choice of operating system, software and configuration, with full root access. We keep the underlying hardware, network, backups, uptime and failover running underneath you, but everything you install and run on the server is yours to manage. It’s total freedom for those who want it.
What software stack do I get on a Self-Managed VPS?
That’s entirely up to you — a Self-Managed VPS gives you a clean server with full root access, so you build exactly the environment you want. For the popular choices — Ubuntu (18.04 through 26.04), Debian (11, 12 and 13) and AlmaLinux (8 and 9) — you can deploy your chosen operating system instantly at setup, ready to go in minutes. If you’d rather run something else, a broad library of other ISO images is also available to install manually, giving you the freedom to build on almost any OS you like. From there, you install and configure whatever stack suits your project — your own web server (Apache, NGINX, LiteSpeed or anything else), database (MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL — your call), PHP versions, and any languages, runtimes or tools you need, from Node.js to Python to Docker. There’s nothing pre-installed to work around and nothing you’re locked into — it’s a blank canvas for you to build on. We keep the hardware, network, backups and failover running underneath, so you’re free to focus on your setup.
Do you provide any support on a Self-Managed VPS?
Yes — while you manage the server day to day, our UK team is still on hand with best-effort support if you hit a problem. And the hardware, network, backups and failover are fully managed by us regardless, so even self-managed, you’re never entirely on your own.
How quickly can I get my server?
Almost instantly — Self-Managed servers are provisioned in minutes, so you can be up and running and building straight away, with no setup wait.
Do I get root access and a control panel?
You get full root access to do whatever you like. There’s no control panel included by default — you’re free to install cPanel, another panel, or run without one entirely, whatever suits you. You also get full console access to start, stop and rebuild your server yourself, anytime.
What security is included on a Self-Managed VPS?
Your server sits on our hardened infrastructure with automatic DDoS protection and failover included as standard — so the foundation is always protected, whatever you run on top. Beyond that, security on the server itself is entirely in your hands: you’re free to install and configure your own firewall, antivirus, security tools and update policies exactly how you want them. There’s no security software pre-installed to work around, giving you complete control over how your server is protected. If you’d rather we handled security for you — with tools like Imunify360, CloudLinux and KernelCare configured and maintained on your behalf — our Fully Managed and Co-Managed plans do exactly that.
Who is Self-Managed best for?
Developers and technical users who want a blank canvas and total control, without paying for management they don’t need. If you’re comfortable administering your own server, it’s the most flexible and cost-effective option. If you’d rather we handled the server, Fully Managed or Co-Managed would suit you better.
